Thats a funny fact revealing pretty much about the arrogant side of yer ppl. I love that. Btw, it first dawned me as i was watching NBA. They called it "the World Title" all the time, and later when i watched the REAL world basketball cup and how DreamTeam USA got punished by everyone, i was ROFLing through the whole tournament! "What, THAT's the World Champs!?" XD

Way to make sweeping generalizations about a whole people, asshole.

Let me take valuable time out of my important, arrogant American day to educate you (although that shouldn't be necessary, because people from the rest of the world are SOOO smart and we're so dumb, right?).

99% of the people you see playing in the basketball world championships for the other countries that beat the US are in the NBA.

The best players in the world, from any country, play in the NBA. This is a generally acknowledged fact by anyone who is not a dipshit.

Therefore, using deductive reasoning-
1. The best players in the world play in the NBA
2. The winner of the NBA title is the best club in the NBA
So
3. The winner of the NBA title is the best club in the world.

The same can be said about MLB. The Japan league is good, but NOBODY disputes the fact that the MLB is better. Even if the US doesn't have the world's best players, the world's best players COME to the US.

Nobody with any actual knowledge of American sports disputes this fact. If there were another league that was even in the same stratosphere as the NBA in terms of quality, then they probably wouldn't call them the world champs. Look at MLS, the MLS champ isn't called World Champ because that would be a farce.

Do some research, you idiot.

I hate foreign snobs who think they're so smart and yet have absolutely no clue what they're talking about.

so what if you are the best? do you need to think you are the world?

a common 'complaint' about the US is "they think they are the world", and this is a good example of it.

If the team is the best team in the world, then they should be called "World Champions"... enough said!

The counterargument is about as weak as saying:
Italy aren't really World Champions because even though they won the World Cup, Vatican City and some small Pacific islands' national teams aren't part of FIFA, so even though those countries would stand no chance against Italy, it's not fair to call Italy world champs until they beat those countres in live competition.

And, in case this isn't clear enough, it's not just America competing, it IS the world.

The battles are staged in American cities, sure, but the players in all American sports come from every corner of the world to play here.

This is such a silly "debate" that I'd rather it not even continue. But if anyone wants to make another ignorant comment, they can feel free to do so... it's quite entertaining.

no longer a debate, just questions?

yeah i'm quite ignorant about american sports. (all sports? :P)

so there isn't a good american basketball club? (i.e. many players are non american? there aren't any composition rules like in europe football clubs?)

offtopic i guess.

Yes it is entertaining. The way you throw untested and unproven statements and allegations. Although NBA [looks] like the best quality in the world, this still means nothing. Of course they can call their champions World Champion, Sun System Champion, Galactic Champion or whatever they like, but still its just a word and gives no credibility to anyone except the domestic public, which so easily buys such cheap P.R. tricks.

Again, the same example: the English FA Premiership.
"And, in case this isn't clear enough, it's not just [England] competing, it IS the world." <-- there are players from dozens of nationalities in the Premiership; the Premiership contains the largest capital among all leagues, when you take the value of all its clubs combined; the Premiership hosts the largest number of players who are playing for their national teams, and the biggest representation on the latest World Cup; etc etc etc.

"The battles are staged in [English] cities, sure, but the players in all [English] [football] come from every corner of the world to play here. <-- this is true, too. But does it mean the English champion (now, Chelsea) is the world champion? NO WAY. They're not even a continental champion, let alone a world one.

Nonsense.

Italy won the final of an international competition which is recognised by all football associations (maybe with the exception of Vatican City and some small Pacific islands) as the one and only football competition which determines the champion of the world. It is called WORLD CUP.

Your not even talking about a football club here! Where's the link!?

On club level, there was something like a world cup which hosts the winners of the continental champions' tournaments of all continents. It is called FIFA Club World Championship. Its organised by FIFA, therefore its legitimate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Club_World_Championship

The current world club champion is São Paulo FC from Brazil. They beat Liverpool on the final. This year's CWC will take place in Japan in December. Barcelona are said to be the favourites, but they ARE NOT world champions until they win that trophy!

If Miami Heat go to an international tournament organised by FIBA, with the participation of the European champion, the Asian, African, etc champions and they win it, only then they can call themselves world champion. But even before going there, they'll have to prove that they're the best team on their continent! No matter how funny and useless this sounds to you.

In case you attempt to tackle this sentence, i'll just mention that the whole world has signed the Kyoto Protocol except USA, and the whole world recognises the Geneva Charter of Children Rights, except USA. But the lack of support from USA doesnt make these two documents illegitimate.

First of all, why this tone? Using inflammatory terms/categories reveals some weakness. We're trying to have a civilised discussion, arent we? Or your just incapable of maintaining one? Otherwise, i'd have to conclude that your not very sure about what your talking about.

Because "best in the world" is not a very clear category, and in any case, its too subjective to allow you to speak with such absolute certainty. NBA [is said!!!] to host the best players in the world. But the NBA champ CANNOT be called world champ, until they face any other foreign team, like the FIBA champ for example. Even if the NBA champ wins 9 out of 10 such finals, still, they have to stand a legitimate challenge. Until then, who is the best in the world and whos not, is just some useless talk of two dumbheads like you and me. Pointless debate here.

So, i dont argue about #1 and #2. But i do not agree with #3. Because:

Many ppl say the English Premiership currently has the best quality in the world as a whole. Because: 1. The best players in the world play in the Premiership. 2. The winner of the Premiership is the best club in the Premiership. So, the winner of the Premiership is the best club in the world!?!? NOT AT ALL! As we can see, obviously thats not the case. A team is not "the best" when it has the most expensive /or most famous/ players in the world. Just look at Real Madrid and you'll see what i mean.

Of course, many will argue that its not the Premiership, but the Spanish League, or Italian Serie A, just because the best players COME to one or the other league; but nevertheless, you still cannot call Barcelona world champion, even though they're European champions (AFTER A HARD-FOUGHT CONTINENTAL/INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION, WHERE THEY DESERVEDLY WON THE TITLE!!!, and i'm saying this as an Arsenal fan!). First they have to face the South American, Asian, African, North American and Oceanian club champs in a competition! Its not even enough to face the Copa Libertadores winner in the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo, thats not a legitimate "world champion final" because the European and Sudamerican teams are only SAID TO BE the best. THEY HAVE TO PROVE IT! Got it?

Dunno whos idiot, dipshit, asshole, snob, etc, but it usually requires at least two brain cells to grasp the facts. I hope you got them.

I don't think anyone believes that the English Premiership is the best league on Earth. It's very clearly the Spanish La Liga. Until the recent scandal, the Serie A could rightfully be considered the second best, with England beating out Germany for third.

Anyone who beleives the English League is the strongest in the world needs a reality check.

Have you ever followed Brasilian or Argentinean leagues closely? I bet you haven't, otherwise you wouldn't have said that. Maybe you meant "in Europe" instead of "on Earth"?

Nope, I very clearly meant "on Earth".

There's a reason all the best players in South America go to Europe. Do a quick count of the Brazilian and Argentinian sides, and the contininent in which they play their football. Almost all of them play in Europe.

Now, if you think you know better than the international coaches and selectors, you're being both arrogant and ignorant.

No way! Ignorant was Parreira, who chose suckers. And they sucked pretty clearly altogether. Why don't you call Parreira ignorant? If he chose all the players for his teams from Brasilian clubs, he would have easily won the WC.

Very good example this is a new player at Dinamo Kiev, a Brasilian Correa from Palmeiras. You don't know anything about him and you don't care. Everybody here asks how was it possible that no one in Europe bought such a marvel. And the Brasilian championships is full of such Correas whom you don't know and don't care. What do you know about Magrao, Pedrinho, Diego Lugano, Fabao, Gustavo and 100 more names?

That was an example. I said that one could easily claim that La Liga is the best, or Serie A (see above). Also, anyone could easily claim the Argentine or Brazilian league is the best (see below). That was my point actually.

Stop calling him idiot. He is not, while you quite likely may turn out to be one.

On-topic: a couple of years ago the whole world used to think the same, what you are saying about NBA, about US baseball. But then they had to play against Cuba at Olimpic Games, which resulted in taking baseball out of Olimpic program. NBA possibly use to be the strongest league in he world, but is not anymore. Otherwise the US team wouln't have been sucking.

I hate those snobs who think that nuclear weapons they have, gives them right to call people idiots.

Baseball hasn't been removed from the Olympic program since it was officially included in 1996. Any time it was included previously was as a demonstration sport which didn't count towards the tally.

Actually i've often been called names like this for raising topics which annoy ppl because of making them feel uncomfortable. Personal trait i guess.

Fortunately, this still hasnt been a reason for anyone dropping a nuke on my head (yet) - mainly because i seem to be switching places of residence like shoes :::)

Besides, someone behaving like this guy here can only amuse me, not annoy. It takes smth far beyond sheer arrogance and ignorance to REALLY annoy me. But thanks for the defense ;}

Btw this topic was cross-posted. Combined, it got a total of 110 comments altogether so far. An average of 30 per community. With a single copy-paste push of the button and a couple of lines of comment - that was enough to bring several forums back to life (at the cost of being called some names again; i can handle that). Speaks for itself :)))
